On the 29th of March 2022, product manager Micah Berman for Android Safety from Google presented at CRISiSLab Webinar. His presentation is “From Seismometer to Smartphone: Android Earthquake Early Warning”, and more than 70 participants joined. The webinar was interactive and very well received.
Google launched the Android Earthquake Alerts System in New Zealand in April 2021 and several alerts have been issued. Android users might’ve received the alerts. As part of our own interest to study the feasibility of an Earthquake Early Warning System in Aotearoa New Zealand, we were thrilled to be able to talk to someone from Google directly.
Micah shared the presentation by elaborating on how the Android Earthquake Alerts System works and various activities that have been carried out with the aim of adapting to varied situations. During the presentation, he also raised questions back to the members of our Community-of-Practice which has generated some excellent discussion. Expert seismologist Dr Caroline Holden and social scientist Dr Lauren Vinnell had some conversations with Micah. Questions about the alert system were raised during the discussions, and Micah mentioned that he would be happy to have further communication and engage with relevant parties from NZ in the future.
Here are some slides from Micah’s presentation.
