Fully Funded PhD Scholarship in Geographic Information Retrieval/Machine Learning for Disaster App

Research Areas:

  • Extraction of disaster impacts from text-based social media sources

  • Integrating the text data with sensor data and conventional geographic data sets using multi-modal data fusion

  • Exploring the use of this data in a question-answering system to support earthquake response

The project will be supervised by Dr Kristin Stock, Director of the Massey Geoinformatics Collaboratory and Senior Lecturer in Information Technology; and Dr Raj Prasanna, CRISiSLab Lead, and Senior Lecturer at Massey University.

The scholarship will provide a student stipend of $27,500 per annum plus tuition fees.


Requirements from applicants:

  • Meeting the University requirements for entry into the PhD programme, including a postgraduate degree in computer science, geospatial science with a strong computational element, or similar

  • A strong computer science background, with skills in deep learning and natural language processing

  • Skills in geographic information/geospatial science will be an advantage
